Juanita Mohammed Szczepanski (1957–2022) was a prolific AIDS activist videomaker featured in our 2016 video program COMPULSIVE PRACTICE. Below, we share her final video work, created in collaboration with Alexandra Juhasz, as well as tributes from Jean Carlomusto and her husband Henry Szczepanski, and links to Juanita’s videos and writing.

In the early 1990s, Alexandra Juhasz began research on what would become a feature documentary in three parts (1998) and scholarly anthology (2001), both called “Women of Vision.” She held five meetings around the US (in Philadelphia, NY, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles). These were supported by independent film organizations and small amounts of grants funding. Over 100 extremely diverse media feminists gathered to share knowledge, interpretations, concerns, media, and strategies. The meetings were documented (on VHS!) and later transcribed and logged (by Alex and/or her students, see Resources for these PDFs). Their attendance lists were and are a who’s who of American media feminism. All this and more you will see in the four hours of footage digitized and annotated here.

PerpiTube: Repurposing Social Media Spaces, co-curated by Pato Hebert and Alexandra Juhasz, models a purposeful, complex, and artful use of social networking technologies and the spaces that hold them. In the gallery and on YouTube, this novel art show organizes the media of 29 invited participants along side the video production of daily visitors to the gallery, everyday YouTube users, invited community members, and you.

The Space is Now Open for All of Us. Together we will collaborate to rethink and remake liveness and delay, mobility and place, presence and absence, solitude and community, both online and off.
