Responses to the Fae Richards Archives (by Zoe Leonard and Cheryl Dunye)

The Fae Richards Archive photo

The Fae Richard’s Archive comprises 82 photographs by Zoe Leonard and Cheryl Dunye used in the film The Watermelon Woman (1996). I served as executive producer for the series and acted in them as Martha Page. These astounding and beautiful images have a large life of their own. They are exhibited internationally as one of the many major projects of Zoe Leonard, and her significant photographic contributions to histories of the archive, as well as lesbian, Black, and women’s photographic representation. They are also written about extensively in the art and academic press and are available in the book, The Fae Richards Photo Archive (Leonard and Dunye, 1996). Some of them were exhibited in the 2016 archival show, Memoirs of a Watermelon Woman at the ONE Archive in LA, curated by Erin Christovale as part of the programming produced for the 20th anniversary re-release of the film.
